Frequently Asked Questions - Recruits

How do I become a member of Alpha Delta Phi?

Membership in Alpha Delta Phi is by invitation only. Candidates must be males who will attend the University of Washington during the 2008-2009 academic year.

Alpha Delta Phi is seeking 20-25 new members who are well rounded, socially adept, responsible, and proven leaders. If you would like to be considered for membership in Alpha Delta Phi, please complete our information form and tell us about yourself. Someone will contact you promptly.

What are Alpha Delta Phi's membership requirements?

As is the case with almost all other fraternities, after a student accepts an invitation to join Alpha Delta Phi, he must sign a Contract and Covenant of Pledgeship, pay a one-time initiation fee, and successfully complete a brief associate membership ("pledge") period.

Alpha Delta Phi's pledge period spans the first six (6) weeks of autumn quarter. During that period, the associate members are taught about Alpha Delta Phi's history, traditions, chapters, and songs. The curriculum and minimum initiation requirements are mandated by Alpha Delta Phi International. The associate members are quizzed weekly about the materials, and an associate member must achieve satisfactory test results to be considered for full membership. The associate membership program is positive and constructive, and simply endeavors to prepare the associate members for their life-long affiliation with Alpha Delta Phi. Moreover, the program conforms with Alpha Delta Phi International's Policy on Acceptable Activities During Pledgeship and the North-American Interfraternity Conference's Resolution Against Hazing.

Alpha Delta Phi International's one-time initiation fee is $350, and it covers the organization's costs that are associated with new membership. That said, the Washington Chapter offers each new member a $500 scholarship that serves to cover that fee and provide the new member with some additional funds to help him get settled at the University of Washington.

Does Alpha Delta Phi have a scholarship program?

Yes. Alpha Delta Phi has established the most generous scholarship program offered by any fraternity at the University of Washington. During the 2008-2009 academic year, Alpha Delta Phi will offer up to $100,000 in scholarships to undergraduate members of the Washington Chapter of Alpha Delta Phi.

How much does it cost to live at Alpha Delta Phi?

Alpha Delta Phi is committed to offering competitive rates for room and board. During the 2008-2009 school year, room and board at Alpha Delta Phi will cost $2100 per quarter, which includes rent, food, and utilities. The cost to live at Alpha Delta Phi is significantly less expensive than the cost to live in a residence hall, and is below the average cost to live in a fraternity at the University of Washington.

Does Alpha Delta Phi have a "townee" program?

No. The alumni of the Washington Chapter of Alpha Delta Phi strongly believe that living in the chapter house is the best way to experience the fraternity, develop a strong and vibrant brotherhood, and maximize one's college experience. Indeed, a fraternity is not just a facility at which to congregate for meals and social functions; it is a brotherhood and a home -- and most brothers' fondest memories are created during the times between the social functions. Therefore, associate members must live in the chapter house, and members must live in the chapter house to be eligible for the scholarship program. Moreover, the alumni strongly encourage members to live in the chapter house during the entirety of their undergraduate education.
