In connection with our commit to attract, retain and motivate only men who honor and respect the integrity of our organizational purpose, and who live and breathe our core values, the Alpha Delta Phi Foundation (the “Foundation”) in 2008 launched the most generous scholarship program of any fraternity or sorority at the University of Washington. Our scholarship program incents and rewards individual and group achievements.
All scholarships awarded under the Washington Chapter of Alpha Delta Phi 2009-2010 scholarship program, summarized below, are awarded at the sole discretion of the Foundation. All scholarship awards are subject to certain eligibility requirements that have been communicated to our active members in writing, the most important of which require personal conduct in compliance with our chapter’s bylaws, Alpha Delta Phi’s Fraternal Expectations, and The Covenant.
Group Academic Scholarships – up to $5,000 per quarter
Sword and Spear Award - $1,000
This scholarship is awarded during Spring quarter to an undergraduate nominated by the Washington Chapter for consideration to receive the ADP International Order of the Sword and Spear Award for outstanding service to the community, his chapter, and his brothers. Commencing Spring 2010, the recipient’s name will be engraved on a library plaque. Note that this Award further requires that the nominee timely complete and file whatever documentation is required for consideration during that calendar year by the ADP International. Lloyd George “Helping Hand to Worthy Senior” Award - $1,000
This scholarship is awarded during Spring quarter to the senior voted “most worthy” by members of his senior class. The criteria for the award is vague, which provides each senior class an opportunity to exhibit judgment. The recipient’s name is engraved on a library plaque. Lloyd George, WA ’42 died in 1958 and bequeathed five percent of his estate to the PNWAADP. Those funds subsequently transferred to the Foundation for management and distribution in accordance with Brother George’s bequest.
Thomas J. White Award - $1,000
This scholarship is awarded during Spring to an undergraduate who embodies the characteristics of Tom White, WA ’88. Brother White, a dedicated student, a competitive athlete, a gregarious spirit, and a true friend to many, died mysteriously in fall from the fraternity in Spring 1986. This award is selected by the Foundation based on nominations from the undergraduate members of the Washington Chapter. Commencing Spring 2010, the recipient’s name will be engraved on a library plaque.
Everts L. "Ebby" Johns, ‘47 Memorial Scholarship - $2,000
This scholarship is awarded during Winter or Spring quarter to any undergraduate male freshman or sophomore that is intent on majoring in a Business related field such as economics, finance, accounting or marketing. Candidates will be evaluated based on academic achievement, participation and leadership in extracurricular and community service activities and programs, and performance at an in-person interview with Foundation officers. To be considered, applicants must submit a one to two page essay summarizing his qualifications, and three letters of recommendation from teachers, employers, coaches or supervisors. The funds for this award were donated by a generous gift of Fluke Corporation stock in the late 1990’s by Brother John’s widow and son (R.J. Nichoalds, WA ’86). Ebby Johns was a member of the class of 1947 at the University of Washington and an active member of Alpha Delta Phi. His education was interrupted for two years by World War II. He graduated in 1949 with a BA in Economics. After passing the CPA exam and working for a time in public accounting, Mr. Johns joined Fluke as its 12th employee. He retired from Fluke after serving in a variety of roles, including Chief Financial Officer and member of its Board of Directors. Commencing Spring 2010, the recipient’s name will be engraved on a library plaque.
Worrall Wilson “Freshman Scholarship” Award - $500
This scholarship is awarded during the Fall quarter to the true Freshman with the top cumulative grade point average during the prior Fall, Winter and Spring quarters of his Freshman year. Recipient’s name is engraved on a library plaque. This award was originally presented by Brother Boland Wilson, WA ’26, in memory of his father, Worrall Wilson, Yale 1897, who while living in Seattle played a role in the establishment of the Washington Chapter.
Glen H. Southwick “Outstanding Alumnus Award”
Given in memory of Glen H. Southwick, WA ’22, this highly coveted award is bestowed by the PNWAADP on an ad hoc basis to an outstanding Washington Chapter alumnus based on his contributions to the fraternity, the community and society as a whole. The recipient’s name is engraved on a library plaque.
Foundation Graduate Scholarships
Monetary awards granted to alumni of the Washington Chapter of Alpha Delta Phi who are pursuing post-graduate studies at distinguished institutions of higher learning. This award may be renamed in memory of generous alumni donors, and recipient names may be engraved on a library plaque.
Seward Scholarhips – up to $1,500
Alpha Delta Phi International offers scholarships to members of Alpha Delta Phi based on academic achievement and contribution to the fraternity.
